What is the flow? Obviously, there is a difference between going with the flow and letting things flow, isn't that right? When a worry enters my mind and I start to overthink, and my train of thoughts and different scenarios seem to be unstoppable, I know exactly what my mom would tell me. She would say: 'Let it flow'. Trying to tell me to stop my efforts to control an outcome of the situation I worry about and let it unfold step by step instead.
It's true. We worry so much about things we no longer have influence on because we had done all we could have done. The old cliché would be to tell ourselves to be patient. But what does that mean? Patient? Should we just sit still and wait for things to happen? It might be impossible to do for some driven individuals. So what does the scenario of patience mean? Being patient is knowing that we did our very best for the outcome we want. And now it's the time to give the situation (or could be a person) time, let it mature and blossom into a beautiful rose while keeping moving on our lives. The beautiful rose can happen to be the outcome we want, but it can be the opposite. It's up to us what we will do with what happens.
There are times when we become impatient with ourselves. We strive for perfection while overlooking our progress. We enter periods of a plateau and feel like nothing is happening in our lives. Although, this dormant periods often seem to precede a growth explosion. Progress is more than perfection. To strive to be the best version of ourselves, to better ourselves every day should be the important elements in our lives.
Sometimes we even tend to put our lives on hold because we think that in order for circumstances to be perfect, something specific needs to happen. We end up shortchanging those we love and ourselves. Isn't perfection when we spend quality time with our family and loved ones? When we have great conversations that leave us feeling inspired, connected, grateful and glowing?
Another approach to flow is by positive psychology. It says that when we are in the state of 'flow', we lose track of time. We are in the middle of inspired action that feels good and we feel a deep sense of purpose.
How do you look at flow and patience?
